Juneau, the capital city
The summer weather in Juneau is cool and rainy. The clouds hang about 30 feet above the water and all over the mountainsides. It's kinda eery.
We went to the Macaulay Fish Hatchery and saw millions of salmon coming "home" to spawn.
This is a look inside the fish ladder most of the way up to the top. It is awesome to watch them get ready to make the next jump. Some make it, some don't. The ones that don't get thrown back into the pile, where they wait their next turn and rest.
The salmon must swim up this fish ladder. The open water at the bottom left has so many salmon waiting their turn that you can almost walk across the water. This hatchery breeds only silver, chub and king salmon.
Les liked to watch the kids and the stupid older ones slip down the hill and into the rocks. Way more fun than watching fish hurry to their deaths.
There were thousands of fish in that holding tank.
A video of more fish. All on the way to slaughter. A lot of them are already taking on the ugly red color.
We stopped into the Red Dog Saloon downtown for a pint ( or 3).
We really enjoy the piano player and the sing-a-longs. Les evens sings along. Can't get him to stop. The piano player Bobby Reynolds is a hoot. We had to purchase new Red Dog Saloon shirts and other junk. We had a blonde bartender who lives in Phoenix in the winter. We tried to talk to her about Phoenix a little- but, well, she was blonde and in her late 20's. Not a good combo for conversation.
We went back again the next day, we liked it soooo much. Same music and songs, same jokes about cruise ships, and cruise ship passengers. Had Jay for a bartender this time, same guy we had met last year in September. Much more fun when the guy behind the bar can actually add something to the conversation.
More about Juneau later, now that the all important pub stuff has been covered.
