Alaska
Baby!!
We have made
it into Alaska with the RV
Beaver Creek, Yukon
to Tok, AK
It was
raining on us as we packed up and prepared to make the final push to Alaska.
The roads were tough again today, lots of frost heaves and gravel breaks and
stretches of gravel road. One long stretch of construction that was miserable, and one wait while the road was blocked by a crew.
We finally
saw a moose, it was so far away with the sun coming up behind it so it was hard
to see and impossible to take a picture of. Other than that we saw not a single
creature. Where are the bears???
The border
crossing was easy, short wait. Then the roads in the United States seemed
better until we realized they (we) don’t mark our frost heaves. NOT GOOD. The U.S. actually uses asphalt instead of the chip seal Canada uses, but the pot holes are just as treacherous, and the asphalt makes it seem like you can go faster, which is a mistake.
There is always another friendly RV'er to take a picture for you, and of coarse we take theirs. This sign is about 1/4 mile before customs with a big parking area.

The line on the bench is the border, so Les is standing in both countries at the same time. The governments have cut a swath through the trees through the mountains to signify the border, it is visible in the background running up the mountain.
We pulled
into Tok, AK in the early afternoon as we gained our last of the 3 hours time change of the
trip. We fueled up and headed to the RV Park, a nice large park with a cool
hiking trail and a bar, liquor store and restaurant right next door. The fuel was cheaper again by about $.50 a gallon, and it was nice not to have to do the metric and currency conversions to figure out what we were paying.
We also went into town (all 3/4 of a mile of it) and found the grocery store. We had been cutting back on all the usual suspects- meat, eggs, fruits, vegetables, etc in order to cross the border and we needed to replenish a little. It was nice to see some of the familiar brands again and the store was surprisingly well stocked and had a better than expected selection.
The trail heading out of the RV park was pretty well maintained and gave us a chance to go for a walk in the trees. No bears.
