Edmonton and Jasper, Alberta
July 21-23
These caribou were happily eating on the side of the road. They couldn't have cared less that about 8 vehicles were stopped taking their picture. They caused an "animal jam". Notice the idiot less than 10 yards from the bull. What a moron.
We stopped in Jasper for a walk about town. We went to the visitors center to scope out the lunch spots. We walked down the main street until we came upon the Jasper Brewing Company, and decided to stop. ( wasn't really optional)
They had a nice selection of appetizers, cider for Nancy, and local brews for Les.
After a few pints, we headed down the road.
These mountains goats were part of a larger herd, maybe 10. Also couldn't have cared less we were all gawking at them. Amazingly, they were within 100 yards of a sign that said to watch for goats.
Sunwapta Falls: We drove, in the truck, from Edmonton to Jasper, a 218 mile drive. Jasper is part of the Canadian Rockies and there are snow covered mountains everywhere you look.
We stayed the night at Sunwapta Falls Mountain Lodge. A cute little "woodsy" place with small cabins with fireplaces.
Dinner was an upscale casual affair in the only restaurant within 40 miles. Started with a few drinks at the bar- a cute little bar with 3 stools and a bartender that works maintenance during the day. (he was less than interesting- not a hockey fan) I had sauteed trout, Les had Thai Curry. Very yummy. Out waitress was a regular at the Brewery in Jasper, we compared favorite menu items.
After dinner we took a hike to the falls.
This was a glacier that was visible from the Icefield Parkway.
The picture above is the former path of the Athabasca Falls. Now it's a stairway to the lower falls.
We stopped back in Jasper for lunch on the way back. Same old brewery, except we had the Nachos that our waitress had recommended. Really good, as was the cider and the pints.
And then we stopped to see a bear on the side of the road.
More caribou
RV life is working out very nicely for us. I love to cook anywhere so we eat well. The laundry rooms have all been very nice and easy to use. The shower that gave us problems before we left is doing nicely. Each park has different water pressure. Some days are better than others. We had the RV water pump replaced in Edmonton, they had on-site RV techs so that was sweet. Since there isn't anything to listen to on the radio we listen to audio books.
Scenery is spectacular on that drive. Howard just threw out a jacket he bought in Red Deer in 1978!!!. Hope you stopped at Christie Mountain (My maiden name). Last time we were driving along there our friend locked they keys in the boot!!! Guys came out to save us looked like something out of deliverance...good for a laugh, gave them $50 extra for their trouble, arrive in Jasper and went to the pub and there they were playing pool
